The oldest and one of the best bars on Northside, Kaibo combines the feel of down – to – earth beach bar with the elegance of one of the Islands finer establishments. It may have  seen several transformations since the purpose built beach shack was first erected to serve drinks to HRH Queen Elizabeth on her tour of Grand Cayman, however Kaibo’s charm remains intact. It has a great bamboo fronted and copper topped bar, sheltered by thatch roof and fairy lights. On offer is a huge selection of ice cold beer (“the coldest on the island, far colder than any refrigeration can achieve”) which is devotedly covered by fresh mountains of ice all day and night.

Wonderful bar staff, retro beach sings on the back wall, free wifi, an incredible menu of island specialities, salads and sandwiches, beach volley as well as comprehensive water sports add to the attraction to spend a full day at Kaibo Beach. Not to mention the endless list of cocktails to complete your beach experience. It’s decidedly unpretentious and a favourite with beach bums, off-duty professionals, watersport fanatics, dog owners, relaxed families and of course the locals. Come to watch the boats pull into the marina, the boating crowd use the gas station and then visit the bar for their own refuelling. Even when the regulars pile into this favourite weekend retreat there is always plenty of space on the white sand beach.

The food is great, fresh, simple and generous in portion. (“delicious and affordable” quote the customers.) Check the chalk

boards for daily specials. From sunset Kaibo will fill up with regulars, but pull up a stool at the bar with arguably the best view on island, and you’ll be made to feel welcome. There is a separate kids menu for younger diners.

Evening beach dining by torch light boasts a separate menu, tasty in its simplicity and use of local ingredients.  The Coconut Curry Grouper is a long standing favourite. Local line-caught fish is a speciality. The boutique wine list is fantastic. Private parties under the thatched cabanas on the beach offer privacy with white muslin curtains, and a sense that at Kaibo you are really living the Caribbean dream. To really finish off the Carib experience ask to see the list from the Rare Rum Bar, a well kept secret hidden away Upstairs, but available to Beach diners in the know. For a more adventurous night out, discover the local biouminescence in nearby BioBay, accesible by kayak or boat tour with a guide.

Kaibo Beach Bar and Grill is a North Side gem tucked away on Cayman Kai, and worth the discovery. The drive is an opportunity to see some real island life en route, and at the point where you have left civilisation behind, turn on to Water Cay Road and find yourself at the perfect paradise beach bar with coconut palms, fishermen, double loungers and thatched cabanas. If you are short of time or want to arrive in style, come by water taxi, a 15 minute journey across the North Sound.

Kaibo is home to many established events, Luna Del Mar, Mardi Gras, Annual Kite Festival, Caribbean Beach BBQ, and is a popular location for private and corporate parties and weddings.
